The practice of sequentially raising and harvesting a second (or third, or sometimes more) crop (usually vegetables) in the same field in a single growing season, especially in warmer climates such as California's Imperial Valley or the Rio Grande valley of Texas and Mexico.

Double cropping is the practice of planting, growing, and harvesting two distinct crops from the same field within a single calendar year. The farmer clears and prepares the soil after the first crop reaches maturity, then immediately sows a second crop that will mature before the growing season ends. In warm regions with long frost-free periods, three or even four crops per year are possible, though this becomes progressively less common and economically viable.

Success depends on climate. The Imperial Valley of California and the Rio Grande Valley of Texas are classic examples, where mild winters and hot summers create a long growing window. A typical sequence might be early spring lettuce followed by summer melons or peppers, with harvests separated by only weeks of soil preparation and replanting. In cooler regions, the math works only for fast-maturing crops like radishes, greens, or bush beans, and the second crop must finish before the first frost. Timing is critical: any delay in the first harvest directly shortens the window available for the second.

Soil management and yield trade-offs

Continuous cropping in the same soil depletes nutrients rapidly and increases pest and disease pressure. Farmers practicing double cropping typically apply heavier fertilizer doses and rotate crop families to manage soilborne pathogens. The interval between crops is often insufficient for natural soil recovery, making this system input-intensive. Yields per crop are frequently lower than single-crop systems on the same field, but total annual yield per acre can exceed that of single-cropping if both crops are successfully harvested.

Equipment and labor scheduling become complex. Mechanical harvesters, plows, and cultivators must be available on tight deadlines; a delayed first harvest can cascade into crop loss if the second planting window closes. Irrigation systems must support both crops, and water availability can be the limiting factor even in otherwise suitable climates. Produce destined for fresh market, rather than processing, is more commonly double-cropped because price premiums justify the management intensity.

Double cropping differs from intercropping, where two crops grow simultaneously in the same field. It also differs from crop rotation, which spreads different crops across fields within a season to manage soil health. Economic viability hinges on whether the combined revenue of two harvests exceeds the additional costs of land preparation, seeds, fertilizer, pest control, and labor. It remains most profitable for high-value vegetable crops in regions where climate permits, and least practical for staple grains grown in temperate zones.
