A creel is a framework, typically made of wood or metal, that holds multiple bobbins or spools of roving, yarn, or sliver in a controlled arrangement so that the fibers can be drawn off smoothly into a spinning frame. The bobbins are mounted on horizontal bars or skewers, and the creel sits either above or beside the spinning machine, feeding fiber downward or horizontally into the drafting zone. The term appears across cotton, wool, and synthetic fiber mills, wherever multiple strands must be assembled and fed to machinery under even tension.

Creels vary in size and configuration depending on the process. On a roving frame, a creel might hold 100 or more bobbins of sliver, each feeding a separate spindle. On a throstle frame, creels are smaller, typically holding 10 to 20 bobbins per frame section. On ring frames and mules, creels feed already-spun roving into the twisting zone. The skewers or bars must be long enough and strong enough to support the weight of full bobbins, which can exceed 500 grams each on modern equipment, and they are often adjustable so that operators can accommodate bobbins of different diameters.

Tension and fiber path

The creel's main function is to maintain even draw-off tension across all bobbins. If tension is uneven, the resulting yarn will have thick and thin places, and dye uptake will be uneven. This is why creels include devices such as compensators or dancer rollers that sense changes in fiber tension and adjust the position of the bobbins or apply braking to slow the pay-out. Some creels use a felt or wire guide to distribute the fibers from many bobbins into a single ribbon before they reach the drafting rollers.

Common problems include bobbin slippage on the skewers, which causes the fiber to pull free or twist under load, and buildup of fiber dust or fluff around the skewer holes, which increases friction and eventually jams the mechanism. Operators must also watch for 'barring' or uneven feed, where bobbins at the ends of the creel pay off fiber faster than those in the center, resulting in a twisted or weak yarn. This occurs when the creel is not level or when skewer bearings wear unevenly.

The word creel comes from Scots and Northern English dialect for a wicker basket or cage, reflecting the original function of holding multiple items in a confined space. In fishing, a creel is still a basket for holding the day's catch. The term has persisted in textile mills for over two centuries because the metaphor is apt: the creel is a container and feeder, though now made of iron or steel and fitted with precision bearings and tension devices that would astound a nineteenth-century millwright.
