A creep is a physical barrier designed to restrict movement by size. It consists of a frame with openings spaced narrowly enough to prevent cattle, sheep, or pigs from passing through, while allowing younger or smaller animals of the same species to move freely. The openings are typically adjustable, ranging from 18 centimeters wide for piglets to 25 to 30 centimeters for calves, depending on the target animal and its age.

The primary function is to manage feeding and care in mixed-age grazing systems. A creep allows young animals access to supplemental feed, pasture, or shelter while excluding their larger herd-mates, preventing competition and ensuring proper nutrition during critical growth phases. This is especially important in beef and dairy operations where calves are creep-fed grain or forage while cows access the main herd ration. In pig farming, creeps are used to provide piglets with starter feed separate from the sow.

Design and Common Problems

Creeps are built from steel or wood frames, often with vertical rails or bars as the restrictive element. The opening width must be precise: too wide and large animals squeeze through; too narrow and young stock jam or refuse to enter. Common failures occur when animals learn to jump or force the barrier, or when debris accumulates and changes the effective opening size. Wear on pivot points and weakening of fasteners under repeated impact also compromise function over time.

The term originates from the verb "creep," reflecting the cautious movement young animals make when passing through an unfamiliar, narrow passage. In grazing management, the creep is one of several architectural controls that subdivide pastoral space by animal size or development stage, alongside side-by-side feeding panels and sorting gates. Its effectiveness depends entirely on animal temperament and proper maintenance of the opening dimensions.
