A crut is a short horizontal or near-horizontal tunnel driven perpendicular or at an angle to the main line of a mine working. Its primary purpose is to provide a cross-connection between parallel seams, shafts, or other excavations, allowing miners and materials to move laterally across the mine layout without traveling the full length of the main passages.
In coal mining, cruts typically connect working seams that lie at different depths or lateral distances. A crut may run between two parallel coal faces being worked simultaneously, or link a production seam to a haulage drift used only for transport. In metal mining, cruts serve similar functions, connecting adits, crosscuts, and main levels to optimize ore extraction routes and ventilation flow. The term is most common in British and European mining nomenclature; North American operators more often use crosscut or cross-cut, though these terms sometimes carry slightly different technical meanings depending on context.
Cruts must be driven with attention to both gradient and ground stability. A slight rise in the direction of travel (typically 1 in 30 to 1 in 50) helps with drainage and prevents water pooling, a constant hazard in underground mining. Rock support methods depend on local geology; in weak ground a crut may require timber props or, in modern practice, steel arches and shotcrete to prevent collapse.
The name derives from an old German or Scandinavian root meaning something like a short cross passage, reflecting the long influence of Continental mining practice on English terminology. In mine surveying and record-keeping, cruts are distinguished from soughs (drainage tunnels) and from tramroads or haulage roads, even when these share the same physical space.
Poor crut maintenance has been the cause of serious accidents. Roof fall, water accumulation, and obstruction of ventilation in a crut can rapidly affect both connected workings. In modern mines, cruts are planned as part of the underground infrastructure before mining begins, with their size, spacing, and support calculated from geological and operational requirements.
