A crutter is a mine or quarry worker responsible for the full cycle of blast hole preparation and execution. The role spans drilling the holes into rock face (typically using pneumatic or hydraulic drills), loading them with explosive charges, and then clearing away the fractured rock once the blast is complete. In underground hard rock mining, the crutter's work is essential to ore extraction; in surface quarrying, it drives the production of aggregate and dimension stone. The term is most common in British and Commonwealth mining vocabulary.

The drilling itself demands precision. Holes must be angled and spaced according to the blast design, which accounts for rock type, desired fragmentation, and safety requirements. Hole diameters typically range from 32 mm to 51 mm in underground work, bored to depths of 2 to 4 metres depending on the planned charge mass and blasting pattern. The crutter must read geological conditions on the fly, adjusting hole placement if ground changes mid-drill.

Loading the holes is where technical knowledge becomes critical. The crutter measures and prepares the explosive charge (ANFO, dynamite, or emulsion, depending on the site) and tamping material, then carefully loads each hole to specification. Improper loading causes uneven fragmentation, flyrock, or misfires that halt production and create hazards. The crutter must also understand detonation sequences and timing to ensure the blast pattern works as designed.

In smaller operations, a single crutter may handle drilling and loading; in larger mines, the role sometimes splits between drill operators and blast loaders. Underground cutters face additional exposure to dust, noise, and vibration from pneumatic tools in confined spaces. Surface cutters in quarries contend with weather and high ambient noise. Misfire investigation, a rare but critical responsibility, typically falls to the crutter and requires strict protocols.

The term itself derives from the verb "to cut," reflecting the original hand tools used before mechanised drills. Though the manual component has diminished, the crutter remains the hands-on expert who translates blast engineering into safe, effective rock breaking. Training usually combines on-the-job mentoring with formal certification in explosives handling, particularly in regulated jurisdictions.
