To demate is to separate a space shuttle orbiter from the back of a Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA), or from a similar heavy-lift transport. The orbiter rides piggyback on the carrier's fuselage during ferry flights between landing sites, manufacturing facilities, and the Kennedy Space Center. Demating removes it from that position, either by mechanical lowering onto a platform or tow system, or by tug and tow across the ground.

The orbiter sits atop the SCA's dorsal (upper) surface, secured by a series of mechanical struts and fasteners that distribute its dead weight, which can exceed 240,000 pounds fully loaded, across the carrier's structural hard points. The attachment points are precisely aligned before mating to ensure aerodynamic fairness and load transfer. Demating therefore requires careful sequencing: power systems are disconnected first, then the mechanical links are released in a prescribed order to prevent bind or misalignment.

Mating and demating are paired operations in the shuttle program's logistics chain. A ferry flight can take 6 to 8 hours and covers roughly 2,000 nautical miles. The orbiter cannot fly on its own fuel to remote locations; the SCA is its only long-distance transport. Ground crews use demating in maintenance facilities, at Edwards Air Force Base after landing, and at Kennedy before rollout to the launch pad. Each operation ties up an expensive aircraft and requires skilled personnel, so demating cycles are documented and scheduled months in advance.

The terminology is specific to aerospace ferry operations. Demating is distinct from separation (which refers to orbiter disconnect from the external tank and solid rocket boosters after launch) and from de-integration (wholesale teardown of systems). It is a structural and mechanical operation only, performed in calm weather and calm air conditions, never in flight or in winds above about 15 knots.
