Ouija board: carrier flight deck status board
In carrier aviation, a Ouija board is a physical tabletop scale model representing an aircraft carrier's flight deck and the precise positions of every aircraft aboard. Handlers move small model aircraft across the board to track actual aircraft locations, loading status, and readiness state. The board serves as the visual control point for flight deck operations, particularly during launch and recovery cycles when dozens of aircraft must be coordinated across a confined space.
The model typically shows the full deck footprint with marked areas for catapult positions, elevator locations, parking spots (called spots), and safety zones. Each miniature aircraft is positioned to match its real counterpart's location on the actual deck. As planes are towed, respotted, or launched, the handler moves the corresponding model piece. Different colored markers or labels indicate aircraft status: ready for launch, armed, fueled, awaiting maintenance, or grounded. The board becomes a real-time three-dimensional inventory.
Why it matters on the line
Deck space is catastrophically limited. A Nimitz-class carrier has roughly 4.5 acres of flight deck, yet must park and service 60+ aircraft. Every spot placement affects launch sequence, recovery operations, and emergency procedures. The Ouija board prevents collisions, ensures proper weight distribution on elevators, and maintains sight lines for aircraft control. Without accurate tracking, a tow vehicle can strike a parked jet or a launch sequence can be disrupted by misplaced aircraft.
The name derives from the parlor game, where a pointer moves across a board marked with letters and numbers to spell messages. Here, the handler moves model aircraft across a marked board to communicate fleet status to the flight deck officer and launch control. It is the primary tool for visual communication in an extremely noisy, time-critical environment where radio traffic is already saturated.
Modern carriers increasingly augment or replace physical Ouija boards with digital display systems and software that mirror deck positions in real time. However, the physical model remains standard on most operational carriers as a backup and as a universally understood reference that requires no screens or network connectivity during combat operations or equipment failure.
