TPM: how airlines measure a flight's true earning power

Ticket point mileage is the product of available seats on an aircraft multiplied by the distance flown in statute miles. A 150-seat regional jet flying 500 miles generates 75,000 TPM; the same aircraft on a 1,000 mile route generates 150,000 TPM. Airlines use this metric to standardize revenue reporting across fleets of different sizes and route lengths, making it possible to compare profitability between a packed regional flight and a half-full widebody haul.

TPM sits alongside two related measurements in airline finance. Available seat miles, or ASM, counts only the seats offered to passengers; revenue passenger miles, or RPM, counts only the seats actually sold. The load factor, expressed as a percentage, is RPM divided by ASM. TPM extends this logic by treating each available seat as a potential revenue unit over a standardized distance, independent of whether the seat was sold. This allows corporate planning to separate the effect of capacity decisions from the effect of sales performance.

Variants and application

Some carriers weight TPM by aircraft type or cabin class, especially for mixed-fleet operations. A legacy carrier operating Boeing 737s and 777s on the same route will see very different TPM figures per departure, even if both flights serve identical endpoints. Scheduling departments use TPM projections to decide which aircraft type should be assigned to a route; capacity planning teams use historical TPM data to forecast when new aircraft will be needed.

TPM is a planning tool, not a profitability measure on its own. A high-TPM flight can still lose money if fuel costs, crew expenses, and ground handling exceed ticket revenue. It is most useful for comparing route utilization and for benchmarking fleet assignments against competitors who publish similar metrics. Small carriers and charter operators use it less frequently because their route networks and aircraft mix are simpler.
