A devil bolt is a substandard or deliberately flawed fastener slipped into a batch of material, typically to mask wider quality failures during inspection. The term, now largely obsolete, belongs to the vocabulary of fraud detection in manufacturing and procurement, particularly in steel mills, foundries, and heavy fabrication shops where material certification carries serious legal and structural consequences.
The defect was usually obvious on close examination: a bolt with insufficient tensile strength, visible cracks, soft metal, incorrect threading, or material composition that would fail simple hardness or bend testing. An inspector running spot checks might examine ten fasteners from a shipment of ten thousand; a devil bolt would be placed where it was likely to be found, giving false confidence that the entire lot met specification. The tactic relied on the inspector's assumption that if the sample passed, the whole shipment was sound.
The adjective devil in industrial trades often meant deceptive or contrary to specification, as in devil's advocate or devil's dust (cheap filler). The devil bolt earned its name because it was a lie in physical form: a ringer designed to deceive. Its presence would only be discovered after it failed in service or during more rigorous secondary testing.
The practice became rare as batch certification systems, mill test reports, and random destructive testing became standard in regulated industries. Modern supply chains use statistical sampling, third-party certification, and traceability codes that make planting defective units impractical. The term survives mainly in historical accounts of pre-standardization manufacturing and in the technical literature of quality control development.
