In placer mining, dirt is the bulk material, clay, silt, sand, gravel, and decomposed rock, that sits above or mixed with payable deposits of gold, tin, cassiterite, or other heavy minerals. It is not waste rock stripped away entirely, but rather the matrix that must be washed, sluiced, or otherwise treated to recover the valuable particles suspended or concentrated within it. The term reflects the prospector's perspective: the earth itself is inert; only the minerals embedded in it have worth.
The composition and volume of dirt determine much of the operating cost and water demand of a placer operation. A deposit with high dirt ratios, meaning many cubic meters of material must be processed to recover a given amount of gold, becomes uneconomical if the cost of moving and washing that dirt exceeds the value of the yield. Conversely, lean but easily moved dirt, such as loose alluvial sand in an ancient riverbed, can justify simple hydraulic or gravity separation methods. The size distribution of particles in the dirt also matters: fine clay binds moisture and clogs screens, while coarse gravel must be crushed or screened out before concentration.
Processing and handling
Placer operators distinguish dirt by its processing behavior. Sticky dirt, rich in clay, requires vigorous washing in scrubbers or trommel screens to disaggregate particles before sluicing. Hard-packed dirt from old terraces or cemented gravels may need soaking or mechanical breaking. The density, angularity, and hardness of the stone fragments in the dirt also affect sluice performance and wear on equipment. A run of dirt with sharp angular gravel will gouge wooden sluice boxes and screens faster than rounded river gravel.
The word dirt, in this context, carries no judgment about cleanliness but rather marks the boundary between raw material and output. A miner's dirt is a geologist's regolith or alluvium. In industrial mineral extraction more broadly, the term has largely been replaced by overburden, tailings, or gangue, depending on whether the material is removed before, during, or after processing. In placer mining, however, dirt remains the standard term for the pay-bearing matrix itself, reflecting the field origins and practical vocabulary of the trade.
