Flatwork is the trade term for horizontal concrete surfaces that are finished level and smooth: floors, slabs, driveways, sidewalks, and warehouse bays. Unlike vertical or sloped work, flatwork demands precision in elevation and surface texture because any deviation from flat becomes visible and affects function. A warehouse floor finished 0.5 inches out of level across a 100-foot bay will cause forklift tip hazard and material creep; a driveway that puddles will fail prematurely. The work sits at the boundary between structural and finishing trades, requiring both proper concrete strength and fine surface craft.
Flatwork begins with subgrade preparation and formwork. The concrete is placed, struck off level with a screed, and worked with floats and trowels to close the surface and expel bleed water. Broom finish, smooth trowel, or light brooming are common finishes depending on slip resistance needs. Load-bearing flatwork like industrial floors often requires control joints cut at regular intervals (typically every 4 to 8 feet for interior slabs) to manage shrinkage cracking. Air entrainment and proper mix design are essential in freeze-thaw climates; slabs in northern regions typically use 4 to 8 percent air entrainment and lower water-cement ratios.
Common failures and site variables
The most frequent flatwork defect is cracking from rapid drying, especially when concrete is placed in hot, dry, or windy conditions. Curling, where slab edges lift due to differential drying between top and bottom surfaces, is nearly unavoidable in thin slabs but is controlled by keeping subgrade moisture stable and curing properly. Uneven settlement from poor subgrade compaction or inadequate bearing capacity will cause depressions or high spots that trap water or create trip hazards. Surface spalling results from scaling salts, freeze-thaw cycling, or de-icing chemicals applied too early in the curing period.
Thickness varies by use: residential slabs are typically 4 inches; warehouse floors are often 5 to 6 inches or more with thickened edges; heavily trafficked industrial floors may be 8 inches or thicker. Reinforcement ranges from wire mesh in light-duty flatwork to rebar grids in heavy-load applications. The term flatwork distinguishes this work from structural concrete, formwork carpentry, or finishing trades like polishing or epoxy coating, though those trades often follow flatwork completion.
