A drafting site is a prepared location where fire apparatus can safely position themselves to draw water directly from a natural source: a lake, river, pond, or stream. When municipal hydrant systems are unavailable or inadequate, firefighters use portable pumps and hard suction hose to pull water from these sources and feed it into their apparatus or directly into attack lines. The site must allow safe vehicle access, stable pump positioning, and reliable water supply even during drawdown.

The physical requirements are modest but critical. A suitable drafting site needs firm ground capable of supporting a fire truck's weight, typically a 3 to 4 foot vertical bank or gently sloped shoreline where a 2.5 inch or 3 inch hard suction hose can reach the water without kinking. Water depth must be sufficient year-round; many departments maintain lists of reliable sites with minimum depths marked, since shallow water in late summer can render a site unusable. The water source itself should be relatively uncontaminated; while municipal water supplies are preferred, drafting operations have historically accepted pond water, river water, and even swimming pools when necessary.

Apparatus and technique

Drafting typically uses a positive displacement pump or centrifugal pump with hard suction hose, as opposed to the rigid piping of hydrant connections. A fire engine equipped with a drafting pump can draw water from 10 to 15 feet below the pump intake; beyond that vertical lift, priming becomes difficult and flow diminishes sharply. The pump must be primed before operation, either by gravity feed from a elevated source or by using a priming device, since air in the suction hose prevents water movement. Once water flows, the apparatus can supply nozzles directly or relay water to the attack line with hoses laid across difficult terrain.

Departments that protect areas without reliable municipal water, particularly rural or mountainous regions, pre-identify and sometimes improve drafting sites during the off-season. Improvements include removing debris from the water line, stabilizing banks with sandbags or concrete pads, and marking water depth on posts. Fire departments may coordinate with local water authorities or property owners to ensure access during emergencies. Poor site selection causes common failures: apparatus getting bogged in mud, suction hose losing prime due to kinks, or the source running dry mid-fire.

The term reflects the technical action of the pumping process: firefighters 'draft' water in the sense of drawing it or pulling it from the source. This distinguishes the operation from hydrant supply, where water is pushed by system pressure. Drafting sites remain essential in wildland operations, rural structural firefighting, and rural water supply planning, even as suburban development has extended hydrant grids into previously unserved areas.
