A duckfoot is a shovel-shaped plow share, typically 3 to 6 inches wide, with a shallow cutting depth of 2 to 4 inches. The blade splays outward slightly from its shank, mimicking the webbed shape of a duck's foot, which gives it both its name and its functional advantage. This design cuts horizontally through topsoil rather than turning it over, slicing through weeds, root systems, and surface crusts without burying organic matter or bringing infertile subsoil to the surface.
Duckfoots attach to cultivators, disk harrows, and sometimes small moldboard plows as replaceable shares. A single implement might carry multiple duckfoots spaced 6 to 12 inches apart to work a swath 3 to 4 feet wide. They excel in conservation tillage systems, particularly no-till or reduced-till operations where the goal is soil protection rather than complete inversion. The shallow cutting angle, typically 15 to 25 degrees from horizontal, means they leave standing stubble and minimize erosion risk compared to deeper working tools.
The duckfoot works best in moist, medium-textured soil. In clay-heavy ground, soil builds up on the blade's flat underside, reducing cutting efficiency and requiring the operator to stop and scrape it clean. Sandy soils offer little resistance, and the tool may skip rather than cut. Stoniness is a real hazard: a duckfoot will catch and bend on buried rock more easily than a narrower share, so fields need to be scouted first.
The underside of a duckfoot dulls faster than a pointed share simply because it presents more surface area to soil abrasion. Operators sharpen duckfoots by lightly grinding or filing the leading edge to maintain a thin, crisp line. Unlike shares that self-scour (shed soil naturally), duckfoots demand more frequent cleaning during operation. Bent or cracked shares must be replaced; repair welding is rarely worthwhile given their modest cost.
Duckfoots sit between true plowing and harrowing in the hierarchy of soil tools. They bridge old and new: small farmers and gardeners value them for weed suppression without deep disturbance, while conservation practitioners use them as part of stacked-implement systems. The term appears in agricultural equipment catalogs from the early 20th century onward, though the tool itself predates mechanical naming, having evolved from hand-hoe designs adapted to animal or mechanical draft.
