Targa top: half-roof, full roll protection

A targa top is a car body configuration that removes the roof panel between the windshield and a fixed roll bar, leaving a structural band of metal running the full width of the car behind the front seats. The removed section is typically a single piece of tempered glass or composite material that can be stowed in the trunk. This design offers open-air driving without the structural compromise of a full convertible, since the roll bar remains in place.

The distinguishing feature is that fixed roll bar, which runs from one side of the chassis to the other, integrated into the body structure. This is different from a sunroof, which is a hole in an otherwise complete roof, or a full convertible, which has no central structural member at all. The roll bar serves both as a safety structure in the event of a rollover and as the visual signature of the body style. Targa-bodied cars typically retain the rear window and rear cargo area, making them more practical than a roadster or Spider configuration.

The term entered automotive vocabulary in 1966 when Porsche introduced the 911 Targa, named after the Targa Florio road race in Sicily. The style gained mainstream recognition because it solved a real problem for customers in climates or circumstances where a convertible felt unsafe or drafty, but a closed roof felt confining. The removable roof panel weighs between 5 and 15 pounds depending on material; modern versions use laminated glass for acoustic and thermal properties, while older examples used resin-bonded steel or aluminum frames with acrylic windows.

Removing and reinstalling the roof panel requires some care to avoid scratching the surrounding paint or damaging weather seals. Storage in the trunk is straightforward once the panel is out, though the structural rigidity of the car is actually designed assuming the roll bar is there; the car should not be driven regularly without the roof section in place. The rear window remains sealed in most targa designs, so airflow when driving open depends entirely on the speed and angle of the windshield.

Manufacturing complexity sits between a convertible and a coupe. Automakers must engineer the roll bar as a load-bearing member, install a dual-seal system around the roof opening, and design an underbody exhaust or cooling path that does not interfere with roof stowage. Modern variants sometimes use a motorized sliding roof instead of a removable panel, which simplifies storage but adds electrical and mechanical complexity. The targa configuration remains a minority choice, found mainly in sports cars and premium convertibles where the cost and added weight are accepted as part of the driving experience.
