mullock

Overburden: waste material generated while searching for minerals or while mining, such as when sinking a shaft.

mullock: the rock you move to get to the ore

Mullock is the barren rock, clay, and other waste material displaced during mining operations. When you sink a shaft, drive a tunnel, or open a pit to reach an ore body, you generate vast quantities of material that has no economic value and must be moved. That material is mullock. In hard rock mining, mullock often makes up 90 percent or more of the total extracted volume, especially in the early stages of developing a mine when you are stripping overburden or sinking shafts through barren ground.

The composition of mullock varies by location and geology. In an iron mine, it might be weathered granite or laterite. In a coal mine, it is typically sandstone, shale, or mudstone. In precious metals mining, mullock can include quartz veins with trace gold, pyrite-bearing schist, or completely barren country rock. The mineralogy matters because it affects how mullock behaves when stockpiled: some mullock is stable; other types slump, erode, or generate acid drainage when exposed to water and air.

Mullock must be removed from underground or pit workings continuously. Large operations truck it to dedicated waste rock dumps, often located downslope from the mine to use gravity. Smaller or historical operations sometimes dumped mullock in nearby valleys or watercourses, creating landscape scars that persist for decades. Modern operations are required to contain mullock in engineered facilities with drainage and stability controls. The cost of moving, dumping, and ultimately rehabilitating mullock dumps represents a major operating expense, and the volume generated dictates the size of haul fleet required.

The term mullock is primarily used in Australian and South African mining contexts, though the material itself is universal. In North America and parts of Europe, waste rock or overburden are more common terms. The word itself has uncertain etymology but appears in Australian mining records from the 1850s. In hard rock mining, mullock is distinguished from tailings, which is the fine-grained waste slurry left after ore has been crushed and separated by flotation or gravity methods.
