haul truck: the backbone of surface mining logistics

A haul truck is a massive articulated or rigid dump vehicle built to move broken ore and waste rock from the pit face to processing plants, waste dumps, or stockpiles. Unlike highway trucks, haul trucks operate on haul roads designed for them: rough, steep, and unpaved. They are engineered to absorb constant punishment from rocky terrain, severe grades, and extreme payload cycles in open-pit mining, quarries, and large construction sites.

Haul trucks come in two main configurations. Rigid-frame trucks, which can weigh 300 to 400 tonnes and carry payloads of 200 to 400 tonnes depending on model, are common in coal mines and aggregate quarries. Articulated trucks, including the familiar semi-trailer layout, are lighter and more maneuverable but less common in deep mining operations. Engine power typically ranges from 300 to 600 horsepower; diesel is universal because of fuel availability and torque characteristics on grades.

Design for reliability, not comfort

The cab is often minimal, tilted forward for weight distribution and visibility. Braking systems are redundant, with spring-applied, hydraulically released brakes on all wheels and often an engine retarder for descent control. Tires are specialized: very large diameter (often 1.5+ meters) to reduce rolling resistance, with thick rubber designed to handle sharp rocks without frequent puncture. Frames are heavily reinforced; the payload bed is high-tensile steel with tipping mechanisms via multiple hydraulic cylinders.

Haul trucks are measured by operating cost per tonne moved, not speed. A typical haul truck might travel 8 to 12 hours per shift, covering 1,500 to 3,000 metres per load cycle. Fuel consumption is substantial, often 60 to 100 litres per hour under load. Maintenance is intensive: regular checks of brake linings, tire integrity, hose routing, and hydraulic fluid condition are critical because failures far from the main workshop can halt an entire pit's production.

The term reflects the core function: to haul. These trucks emerged in the mid-twentieth century as mines went deeper and ore grades required larger volume moves. Modern haul trucks are often the most costly single pieces of equipment in a mining fleet, sometimes exceeding the price of excavators. Their design life is typically 5 to 8 years under intensive use before major rebuilding or replacement becomes economic. Used trucks are regularly recycled into other operations or sold to developing countries where service infrastructure supports older models.
