A fire alarm is a system that detects the presence of fire or smoke and automatically alerts occupants and emergency services. It consists of detection devices (smoke detectors, heat detectors, or flame sensors) connected to a control panel that sounds audible and visual alarms and, in most cases, transmits a signal to a monitoring station or directly to the fire department. The system is designed to provide early warning so people can evacuate before conditions become dangerous.

Detection methods vary by application and hazard. Ionization detectors sense smoke particles from fast-flaming fires; photoelectric detectors respond better to smoldering fires. Heat detectors activate at fixed temperatures, typically 135°F to 165°F, and are often used in kitchens where cooking smoke would trigger nuisance alarms. Flame detectors using infrared or ultraviolet sensors are essential in high-hazard industrial spaces with flammable liquids or gases. Multi-sensor detectors combine ionization and photoelectric technology for better coverage.

System architecture and monitoring

Fire alarm systems are wired in series or addressable loops. Conventional systems group detectors on zones; addressable systems assign each device a unique address so the control panel identifies exactly which detector activated. The panel itself houses batteries for backup power (required by code for 24 to 72 hours operation depending on jurisdiction), relays for triggering sirens or strobes, and a communication module. Most jurisdictions require professional monitoring: the system sends a signal via telephone line, internet, or cellular connection to a licensed monitoring center that verifies the alarm and contacts the fire department.

Building codes mandate fire alarm installation in commercial structures, industrial facilities, and multi-unit residential buildings. Detectors must be placed near ceilings where smoke and heat rise, spaced according to square footage (typically one detector per 900 square feet for ionization, 1,200 for photoelectric). Stairwells, corridors, and large open spaces require their own coverage. The control panel is usually mounted near the main building entrance so firefighters can assess system status upon arrival.

Common failures occur when detectors become dirty or blocked by dust and insulation, reducing sensitivity. Dead batteries in wireless detectors cause missed alarms. False alarms triggered by cooking or dust waste fire department resources and erode trust in the system. Regular testing and maintenance are essential: detectors should be vacuumed or replaced annually, batteries checked quarterly, and the entire system professionally inspected every one to three years depending on code. Interconnected smoke detectors in residential buildings improve egress safety by alerting all floors simultaneously rather than only the affected zone.
