A fire bucket is a rigid container, typically made of galvanized steel or plastic, holding between 9 and 12 liters of water or dry agent, stationed at fixed points in a facility for immediate use against incipient fires. It serves as the first line of defense before trained personnel or automatic suppression systems engage, and is legally mandated in many jurisdictions as part of minimum fire safety provision.

Water-filled buckets remain the most common type in general industrial and commercial settings. Sand or other dry agents (typically silica sand or proprietary granular materials) are preferred near electrical equipment or where water reactivity is a concern, such as around alkali metals or certain chemical processes. Some facilities maintain both types in adjacent locations. The bucket itself must have a tight-fitting lid to prevent spillage and contamination, and is often painted bright red or yellow with reflective markings and a fire symbol to ensure visibility in smoke or poor light.

Limitations and proper placement

Fire buckets are effective only on fires in their earliest stages, roughly confined to a single item or a small area before active flame develops. Their reach is limited to about 2 to 3 meters; they require the operator to approach the fire closely and apply the contents with deliberate action. This restriction makes them unsuitable for personnel without training, and they pose real risk if used against fires involving pressurized containers, flammable liquids in quantity, or electrical hazards not yet de-energized. Placement is critical: buckets must be accessible without obstruction, mounted at waist height on clearly marked stands or brackets, and distributed at intervals of no more than 30 to 40 meters in high-risk areas.

The term 'bucket' persists despite modern alternatives because it denotes both a container and a method, rooted in centuries of fire suppression practice before pumped water systems. Industrial codes in Europe, North America, and other regions still require them as supplementary provision, particularly in workshops, storage areas, and outdoor loading zones. They are cheap to maintain, require no power, do not degrade over time if kept dry, and provide no false confidence that they replace proper fire detection or extinguishing systems.

Employers must ensure buckets are inspected monthly for damage, water loss due to evaporation, or sand compaction. Sand buckets need occasional turning to prevent caking. Staff must be made aware of bucket locations during induction, and buckets must never be removed or repurposed without formal replacement. Confusion between water and sand buckets, or unfamiliarity with their proper use, leads to preventable worsening of fires in real incidents.
