A fire brigade is a permanent or semi-permanent organization trained and equipped to detect, suppress, and extinguish fires in buildings, industrial plants, vehicles, and open areas. In industrial settings, brigades are often on-site or contracted to respond within minutes. They operate pumps, hoses, ladders, breathing apparatus, and detection systems; coordinate evacuation; and manage water supply and chemical suppression agents. Industrial brigades differ from municipal services in their familiarity with specific hazards: chemical storage, electrical infrastructure, confined spaces, or process temperatures that demand specialized tactics.

Most brigades are hierarchical: a chief commands officers who lead teams of firefighters. Brigades maintain equipment inventories, conduct drills, study site blueprints and material inventories, and keep records of inspections and incidents. Shift rotation is common in larger brigades; smaller industrial plants may have part-time or volunteer brigades supplemented by municipal response. Training covers hose handling, pump operation, rescue techniques, hazardous materials identification, and first aid. Industrial brigades are often required by regulation to hold current certifications in their jurisdiction.

Brigade response and industrial specifics

Response time is critical in industrial fire prevention. A brigade positioned on-site can begin suppression within 1 to 2 minutes, whereas municipal brigades may arrive in 5 to 15 minutes depending on distance and traffic. Industrial brigades study facility layouts to locate fire exits, hydrants, chemical stores, and electrical shutoffs. They identify which areas demand foam, dry powder, or water suppression: an alcohol fire or magnesium fire cannot be fought with water alone. Brigades coordinate with operators to isolate processes, shut off gas lines, or depressurize vessels.

Common failures stem from inadequate staffing, outdated equipment, poor drilling frequency, or failure to update hazard data when a facility's processes change. Brigades may be undermanned if a facility is understaffed on night shifts, leaving fewer trained personnel available. Water supply interruptions, frozen hydrants, or plugged nozzles cause delays. Personnel who are trained but not active in firefighting drift out of readiness, particularly in plants with low fire incident rates.

The term brigade derives from military usage, reflecting the hierarchical, uniformed, and disciplined structure expected of organized fire services. In some countries, industrial brigades are formally part of the national fire service; in others, they are private contractors employed by the facility owner. Regulatory frameworks vary: some jurisdictions mandate on-site brigades for plants above a certain size or hazard class, while others permit reliance on municipal response with supplemental private brigades for specialized hazards.
