A flat wagon is an open railway vehicle consisting of a flat deck mounted on a frame with bogies or axles, designed to carry cargo that does not require weather protection or containment. Unlike boxcars or hoppers, it has no sides, roof, or functional walls, though some variants feature low stakes or removable panels up to knee height. The deck itself, typically made of timber or steel, sits between 0.9 and 1.2 metres above rail level, depending on the loading gauge of the railway network.

Flat wagons dominate heavy industry transport: steel coils, structural beams, machinery, prefabricated building sections, and containerized freight all move on them. A typical European flat wagon has a carrying capacity between 20 and 30 tonnes, with deck lengths ranging from 9 to 13 metres. Securing cargo to the deck relies on steel corner posts, chain anchor points, or rope loops welded or bolted to the frame. Some modern variants include drop-side panels that can be lowered hydraulically to ease loading and unloading of bulky items.

The absence of superstructure makes flat wagons cheap to manufacture and maintain, but it also demands precise load distribution and rigid lashing discipline. Badly secured loads shift in transit, causing derailments or damage to trackside infrastructure. Asymmetrical loads, especially on curves, can stress the suspension unevenly. Weight distribution must be calculated before loading to prevent axle overload or pitching on couplers.

Variants and specialization

Rail operators distinguish between general-purpose flat wagons and specialized types. Flat wagons with permanently fitted side-stakes (called stake wagons) carry timber and long materials. Depressed-centre flats, with the deck recessed between the bogies, carry items taller than the standard gauge allows. Bolster wagons feature removable vertical posts at the ends for carrying coils and reels. Piggyback flats carry road trailers in intermodal service, with the wagon acting as a five-axle road-rail interface.

The flat wagon remains the workhorse of rail freight because it adapts to almost any commodity that can be tied down. Its simplicity, combined with the discipline required to use it safely, makes it indispensable to steel mills, ports, and manufacturing plants with dedicated rail spurs. Where speed or protection matters, shippers graduate to enclosed stock; where economy dominates, they return to the flat wagon.
