A cess path is a walking route that runs parallel to a railway line, typically positioned on the outer edge of the ballast shoulder. It allows track workers, inspectors, and maintenance crews to move safely alongside the rails without stepping on sleepers or fouling the track itself. The path is usually several feet wide, compacted earth or gravel, and sits between the outer edge of the ballast and any lineside fencing or boundary.
The term cess derives from the Latin cessio, meaning a yielding or cession of land. In railway terminology, it specifically refers to the strip of land owned or controlled by the railway company that lies immediately adjacent to the formed track. The cess path is the designated pedestrian way within this property. On busy or high-speed lines, cess paths may be stabilized with crushed stone or consolidated materials to prevent rutting and maintain firm footing in wet conditions.
Most railways maintain cess paths on both sides of a line, though single-sided paths are common on narrow rights of way.
