In manufacturing and industrial piping, a flexible is a length of hose, tubing, or reinforced ducting designed to bend and move where a rigid pipe would fail or prove impractical. Flexibles absorb vibration, allow for minor misalignment between equipment, and reach around obstacles in tight spaces. They come in rubber, thermoplastic, silicone, or fabric compounds, depending on the fluid, temperature, and pressure the line must handle.
The construction of an industrial flexible is layered: an inner tube that contains the working fluid, one or more reinforcement layers (usually wire braid, spiral wound wire, or textile yarn), and an outer cover for protection. Wire-braid reinforcement handles pressure up to around 250 bar in medium-duty applications; spiral wire or high-tensile versions go higher. The pitch and density of the braid directly affect burst pressure and bend radius. A tighter weave supports higher pressure but reduces flexibility.
Flexibles are sorted by application and pressure rating. Hose for hydraulic systems carries mineral oil and withstands 210 to 350 bar routinely. Steam hose must tolerate temperatures from 120 to 230 degrees Celsius and internal condensation. Pneumatic hose operates at lower pressures, typically 10 to 25 bar, and handles compressed air. Food-grade silicone flexibles face sanitary regulations. Each type has a minimum bend radius, below which the reinforcement layers crimp and the hose fails.
Common failures and selection pitfalls
Flexibles fail when bent below their rated radius, when exposed to incompatible fluids that swell the inner tube, or when the outer cover cracks and allows water ingress into the reinforcement, triggering corrosion and eventual rupture. Abrasion against sharp edges, UV exposure on exposed outdoor runs, and vibration fatigue at connection points are also frequent causes. Pressure spikes and thermal cycling degrade seal integrity at the crimped end fittings, which is why hydrostatic testing and visual inspection matter before installation.
The term flexible is sometimes used loosely to mean any hose, but in precise trade language it refers to the hose itself as a distinct component, separate from its fittings, couplers, or clamps. A complete flexible line includes the hose plus the crimped ferrule and adapter at each end. Specifying a flexible requires knowing the working pressure, the fluid type, the operating temperature range, the required bend radius, and the nominal bore diameter. Undersizing the hose to save cost or mismatching materials to the fluid are the most common specification errors on the shop floor.
