Garden soil is a manufactured or blended topsoil product, typically 6 to 12 inches deep, formulated by mixing native soil with organic amendments such as compost, aged bark, peat moss, or coir. Unlike raw topsoil stripped from construction sites, garden soil is engineered to support ornamental plants, vegetables, and turf by providing both physical structure and biological activity. It sits between raw topsoil and potting mix on the spectrum of growing media, offering better drainage and nutrient content than unimproved earth while remaining cost-effective for large landscape applications.
The organic matter content typically ranges from 5 to 15 percent by volume, which improves water retention and cation exchange capacity, allowing roots to access nutrients more readily. The base soil component is usually a loam or clay loam, chosen for its ability to hold water without waterlogging. Compost provides slow-release nitrogen and microbial populations; peat or coir adds porosity and acidity buffering. Some commercial blends include fertilizer additions (NPK ratios of 5-5-5 or similar), though unfertilized grades are common for projects where nutrient levels are already adequate or must be controlled precisely.
Garden soil comes in bagged form for small projects (typically 1 to 3 cubic feet per bag) or bulk delivery by the cubic yard for landscape beds, vegetable gardens, and remediation work. Suppliers often offer local variants depending on regional soil mineralogy and available amendments. Some producers screen out stones larger than 1/2 inch; others do not. Density varies but typically runs 1,200 to 1,400 pounds per cubic yard in the wet state, making handling labor-intensive for large areas.
Common problems include settling over the first growing season as organic matter decomposes, compaction from foot traffic if the soil is worked while wet, and inconsistent composition when sourced from different batches. Poor quality blends may contain clay-heavy subsoil with minimal organic matter, defeating the product's purpose. Garden soil left exposed to rain for weeks can become anaerobic in its lower layers, causing odor and reduced drainage; covering stockpiles is standard practice.
In trade use, garden soil differs from potting soil (which is mostly peat or coir and is sterile) and from landscape mulch (which provides surface cover but minimal rooting medium). It is often confused with compost, but compost is the amendment ingredient, not the finished growing medium. Garden soil fills the practical middle ground: more controlled than native topsoil, more economical than imported potting blends, and suitable for perennial beds where plants establish roots deeper than container crops require.
