A stocker is a young bovine, usually a calf weaned between 6 and 12 months old, purchased to be grown out on pasture or roughage before being sold at a later date. The animal is typically lighter in weight than a feeder animal and is managed for sustained gain rather than rapid fattening. Stockers are the foundation animals in a growing operation that aims to capture seasonal price spreads or prepare cattle for eventual finishing.

Stockers are often wintered on hay, silage, or other low-cost forage, then moved to pasture in spring to gain frame size and muscling. The goal is to add 1.5 to 2.5 pounds per day over several months, building a larger, more mature animal that can either enter a finishing feedlot or be sold directly. This contrasts with a feeder calf, which enters a feedlot immediately for concentrated grain feeding and rapid weight gain over 4 to 6 months.

Market and Management Practice

Stocker operations depend on seasonal forage availability and price timing. An operator buys cattle when prices are depressed (often in fall), holds them through winter on cheap roughage, grazes them on spring and summer pasture, then sells them when prices have risen or when they reach target weight. Success requires calculating the spread between purchase price, winter feed costs, grazing costs, and sale price. Disease, poor grazing conditions, or unexpected price drops can eliminate profit margins quickly.

The term reflects the function of these animals in the supply chain: they are stock being held and grown, not prepared for immediate slaughter. A stocker may be sold to a feedlot, to another grazing operation, or directly to a processor, depending on market conditions and the animal's development. Genetics, breed type, and body condition at purchase all influence how efficiently a stocker converts forage into saleable weight.
