gobline: the edge where worked coal meets left waste
The gobline marks the boundary between gob, the accumulated waste left behind in an exhausted coal seam, and the intact coal face that mining operations will work next. In longwall mining, it is the line where pillars have been extracted and allowed to collapse, filling the void with broken rock and coal slack, meeting the coal still being extracted. Understanding the gobline is crucial because it defines both the geometry of the working area and the stability of surrounding ground.
The gobline shifts as mining progresses. In pillar extraction, the active mining face advances toward or along this edge; in panel mining, the line marks where the roof has already fallen and subsidence has stabilized. The exact position of the gobline must be tracked by surveying to maintain proper ventilation routes, escape ways, and to prevent miners from working in zones where ground control is compromised. Inaccuracy in locating the gobline can lead to working in unstable ground or to ventilation short-circuits where fresh air bypasses working areas through collapsed zones.
Variants and ground behavior
In shallow seams, the gobline may be sharp and well-defined because surface subsidence occurs quickly and stabilizes. In deeper workings, the gobline becomes less distinct; the gob may be swollen or compacted unpredictably, and the boundary with unmined coal becomes a zone of transition rather than a line. Differential settlement at the gobline can cause falls of waste material back into active workings, particularly if water saturation destabilizes the gob or if the gob contains significant amounts of fine material (coal dust and shale fines) that can slump or flow.
The term itself comes from the verb gob, meaning to throw or to pack waste into a space, and -line, denoting a boundary or edge. It is distinctly British in usage, particularly in United Kingdom coal mining terminology. Similar boundaries in other extraction industries may be called the gob edge or waste contact, but gobline remains standard in coal operations documentation.
Monitoring the gobline is part of wider ground control planning. Surveyors, mining engineers, and roadway development staff must locate it before advancing tunnels, sinking shafts, or placing support. Failure to respect the gobline, or to account for movement of ground near it during extraction, has been a factor in roof falls and sudden collapses in working areas positioned too close to heavily compacted or saturated gob.
