A hair bracket is a structural timber or metal reinforcement fitted at the stern face of a ship's figurehead, running aft (toward the rear) to tie the ornamental carving into the main structure of the bow. It exists where the figurehead meets the stem, absorbing the shear and bending stresses that arise from wave action, rigging tension, and the weight of the carving itself. On wooden ships, this was typically a curved piece of oak or similar hardwood, sometimes doubled or tripled for critical vessels. Modern steel ships use welded angle iron or channel sections in the same position.

The hair bracket is not visible to casual observers; it runs along the after face of the figurehead, often completely hidden by the carving or by the rabbet line where hull planks meet the stem. Its name likely derives from its function at the very edge or "hair" line of the figurehead where it transitions into the structural hull. Alternative terms in historical ship carpentry include figurehead knee or figurehead support, though these names are less common in modern practice.

Structural role and variants

On clippers and naval vessels of the 19th century, hair brackets were often elaborate and themselves decorated, since they remained partly visible from certain angles. A simple merchant vessel might have a single strap running from the base of the carving downward; a warship might have multiple braced connections, sometimes with gallery rails or secondary brackets running perpendicular. The size and complexity depended entirely on the weight and aerodynamic drag of the figurehead, which on some first-rates could exceed half a ton.

Failure of a hair bracket was a serious concern. A cracked or loosened bracket could allow the figurehead to move independently of the stem in a seaway, opening the wood to rot or causing the entire carving to be lost. Vibration at sea could work a poorly fitted bracket loose within months. Shipwrights therefore took care to ensure tight joinery and sometimes added metal bolts or straps for redundancy. The bracket had to resist both vertical bending (from the figurehead's weight) and horizontal shear (from wind and wave pressure on the bow).

Modern container ships and bulk carriers no longer carry figureheads, so hair brackets have become a historical curiosity. Preservation of wooden tall ships and museum vessels still requires sound understanding of this detail. When restoring a 19th-century bow, the hair bracket is often the first structural element to show decay, and its failure pattern reveals much about how the original ship was used and maintained.
