Hand-tabbing is the practice of applying small dabs of roofing cement to the underside of shingle tabs rather than relying solely on nails for attachment. The adhesive, typically a bitumen-based or asphalt-modified mastic, creates additional mechanical grip between the shingle tab and the course below, particularly useful in high-wind exposure or on low-slope roofs where standard fastening may prove insufficient.

The process involves placing a dime-to-quarter-sized spot of roofing cement at each corner of a shingle tab, sometimes along the leading edge as well. This reduces the chances of wind uplift in storms and helps prevent curling, a common failure mode in hot climates where thermal expansion and contraction work against mechanical fasteners alone. The tabs are then pressed firmly into place, typically while the adhesive is still tacky enough to bond within minutes.

Hand-tabbing becomes standard practice in zones subject to sustained winds above 90 miles per hour, in coastal areas with salt spray corrosion risks, or on buildings with unusual geometry such as roof edges that catch wind. It is also required on certain low-slope or stepped-roof assemblies where nails alone do not meet building code wind-resistance tables. Some manufacturers recommend it even in moderate climates as a belt-and-suspenders measure, though it adds labor cost and is less common in regions with consistently calm conditions.

The adhesive must cure fully before exposure to serious weather; ambient temperature and humidity affect bond time. Applying cement in cold, damp conditions extends setup time and reduces final strength. Some roofers spot-tab only perimeter shingles on a roof; others do every course, depending on specification and risk assessment. Poor application, inadequate adhesive quantity, or rushing installation before cure can undermine the entire purpose of the technique.

Hand-tabbing is labor-intensive and requires trained crews; it does not lend itself to rapid installation. For this reason, it is most common on high-value or high-risk installations, new construction in exposed locations, and re-roofing projects in coastal or mountainous regions. The term reflects its manual nature, distinguishing it from factory-laminated shingles that arrive pre-tabbed with adhesive strips already applied at the mill.
