A type of heavy forestry vehicle employed in cut-to-length logging for felling, delimbing and bucking trees; an instance of this type.

harvester: the tracked machine that turns standing trees into logs

A harvester is a self-propelled forestry machine that performs multiple operations in a single pass through the forest. It fells trees, removes branches (delimbs), and cuts the trunk into merchantable lengths (bucks) all at the roadside or landing. The work that once required a chainsaw operator, a debarker, and a cross-cut saw is now done by hydraulic arms and rotating cutting heads mounted on a tracked or wheeled chassis.

The business end is the processing head, mounted on an articulated boom. This head contains a circular saw blade, powered feed rollers, and knives or calipers that grip the log as it rotates. The operator sits in an enclosed cab with joystick controls for the boom and feed system, watching the work through cameras since sightlines are poor from ground level. Harvesters range from small machines weighing 15 to 20 tonnes, used in thinning operations and steep terrain, to large base models weighing 40 tonnes or more for primary felling in managed plantations.

The machine must move continuously through the stand to justify its capital cost and fuel consumption. Typical productivity in favorable conditions reaches 20 to 30 cubic metres per shift, though this varies sharply with tree size, species, terrain, and operator skill. In dense young plantation forestry with uniform logs, harvesters excel. In irregular natural forest or where logs must be sorted by length and grade, they are less efficient because the head must make multiple cuts and decisions per tree.

Damage and wear patterns

Harvester operators must manage several failure modes. The cutting head dulls rapidly on grit-laden bark or in stands contaminated by old metal hardware; a dull blade pulls rather than cuts, stalling the feed rollers and burning the saw bearing. Tracks sink and rut in waterlogged soil, and the machine's ground pressure (typically 0.35 to 0.50 MPa) concentrates weight on soft ground far more than a wheeled skidder. Hydraulic hoses rub through under branch contact. The boom reach, usually 8 to 10 metres, limits the machine to harvesting a strip roughly 20 metres wide on each pass.

The name "harvester" reflects the machine's purpose: to harvest timber as a crop. In North America, it is often called a feller-buncher when it simply fells and bunches trees, or a processor when it only delimbs and bucks logs that have been felled and skidded separately. European and Scandinavian forestry adopted the integrated harvester model earlier, and the term is now standard in industrial timber operations worldwide. The machine sits in the middle of the logging system: trees are typically felled by the harvester, then extracted by a skidder or forwarder, and trucked from the landing to the mill.
