A heck-box is a grating or comb-like device mounted on a warping machine that separates individual warp threads and keeps them in parallel alignment as they wind onto the warp beam. It sits in the path of the threads between the creel (where yarn packages sit) and the beam, and its primary job is to prevent threads from tangling, crossing, or bunching together during the warping process. Without it, hundreds or thousands of threads would mat into a useless knot.
The device consists of a frame holding a grid of thin metal bars or wires spaced to match the thread count and fineness required for a particular fabric. Common spacing ranges from 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch, depending on the yarn denier and the width of the warp being prepared. The threads pass through the gaps in the grid in a single layer, emerging on the other side in strict order and with even tension. Some designs include movable sections or multiple stages to accommodate variable thread counts or to guide threads around tension rollers.
The name derives from the Middle English word hecke, meaning a framework or lattice, and appears in dated textile literature. The term is now largely replaced by more specific names like reed (though that term applies more strictly to the weaving loom) or threading frame, reflecting both technical drift and the decline of warping as a widespread hand operation in industrial mills.
Heck-boxes are critical in worsted and cotton weaving, where warp quality directly affects loom efficiency and fabric regularity. Neglect leads to thread breakage during weaving, dropped stitches, and visible faults in the finished cloth. The device must be cleaned regularly to remove lint and sizing residue that accumulate on the bars, particularly in operations using slashed or gummed yarns.
