To prepare (flax) for spinning, using special combs called hackles.

Heckling is the process of straightening and aligning flax fibers by drawing them repeatedly through a coarse comb, called a hackle or heckle. The tool itself consists of a bed of parallel steel pins or teeth set into a wooden or metal frame, spaced typically 3 to 6 millimeters apart depending on the fineness required. The worker holds a bundle of raw flax straw and pulls it backward through the pins, which comb out the short fibers, knots, and woody debris, leaving long fibers parallel and ready for spinning into thread or yarn.
The work prepares flax in stages. Coarse hackles with wider tooth spacing remove the bulk of shive (woody core) and short fibers; finer hackles progressively align what remains into glossy, parallel strands. A single bundle may pass through three or four progressively finer hackles before it is ready for the spinner's wheel. The discarded short fibers and dust, called tow, have their own value as lower-grade material for coarser textiles, twine, or padding.
Hand heckling, still practiced by small producers and craftspeople, uses a stationary hackle mounted on a bench. Industrial heckling machines, developed in the nineteenth century, fed flax through rotating or reciprocating combs at speed, with workers loading and unloading bundles. The output and fiber quality depend heavily on feed rate, tooth spacing, and operator skill. Poor heckling leaves fiber tangled or broken; over-heckling wastes material.
The name derives from the Old English hackle, which in turn relates to the shape and function of the tool, similar to a coarse rake or comb. The verb form is most common in flax regions: Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, and parts of France and Russia historically saw intensive heckling work, much of it done by women and children hired seasonally.
Heckling sits between retting (water-soaking to loosen the fibers from the woody core) and spinning. Without it, raw flax cannot be spun into fine, even yarn. Industrial flax production still uses heckling as a core step, though modern machinery is faster and more uniform than hand work. The process is less common now because synthetic fibers dominate many markets, but linen production depends entirely on it.
