A helper is an additional locomotive coupled to a freight or passenger train to provide extra tractive force, typically used on steep grades where a single locomotive cannot maintain safe speed or cannot move the load at all. The helper is positioned either at the front of the train (in front of the lead locomotive) or at the rear, depending on the line profile and operational practice. On the steepest sections, both front and rear helpers may be deployed.
The economics of helper operation depend on line gradient and traffic volume. On routes with sustained grades above 1.5 percent, helper locomotives may be stationed permanently at the base of the grade or repositioned by light engine movements. Dispatchers plan train consists knowing which sections require helpers; a 100-car freight train might move unaided on level track but require a helper locomotive rated at 80 to 100 tons of tractive effort on a 2 percent grade. The cost of the helper's fuel, crew, and maintenance must be weighed against the cost of splitting the train into two lighter consists.
Front versus rear positioning
Front helpers (helpers at the head of the train) are favored on continuous steep grades because the lead locomotives can manage brake distribution and speed regulation. Rear helpers are positioned behind the train's brake van or at the very end of the consist. Rear helpers are sometimes preferred on undulating terrain because they can be cut off as soon as the grade eases, reducing dead weight. In freight yards, a helper locomotive may push rather than pull, especially on inclines leading away from a depot.
Modern helper operation often involves dynamic braking. A helper equipped with dynamic brakes can dissipate energy while descending a grade, reducing wear on air brakes and allowing the train to maintain controlled speed without overheating friction surfaces. This is particularly important on long descents after a mountain crossing.
The term 'helper' reflects the locomotive's secondary, though essential, role: it assists the lead locomotive rather than directing the train. Regional railroads, mountain lines (such as routes in the Appalachian and Rocky Mountain regions), and industrial railways with steep internal grades all depend on helper operations as a permanent part of their timetable and infrastructure planning.
