A helping hand is a weighted stand fitted with two or more articulated arms that grip and hold components steady during soldering, assembly, or inspection. Each arm terminates in a crocodile clip (also called an alligator clip) that clamps onto wire, PCB traces, or small metal parts. The base, typically cast iron or lead-weighted steel, provides enough mass to prevent tipping when horizontal pressure is applied to a clip. Flexible joints at the shoulders and elbows allow rotation and positioning in three dimensions.

The tool excels at holding two wires or wire ends in contact for soldering without requiring a third hand or a second person. In electronics assembly, it positions component leads, small PCBs, or shield cans while the operator uses a soldering iron and solder spool. Some designs include a small magnifying lens mounted on a gooseneck or hinged arm, typically 2x to 5x magnification, to enlarge work for operators with limited eyesight or when joints are tiny (0402 surface-mount components, for example).

Variants range from basic two-clip stands under 200 grams to elaborate rigs with four arms, flexible balljoints, and integral LED task lighting. Clip jaw pressure varies: lighter springs suit delicate work like enameled wire; heavier springs grip thick copper or aluminum cable. Some clips have serrated jaws for firm grip; others use smooth jaws or copper-plated faces to avoid marring shiny surfaces or damaging insulation.

Common failure modes and limitations

The clips lose grip when springs weaken after years of opening and closing, especially if they are repeatedly forced open past their design range. Solder splash and flux residue build up in the jaw pivot, causing stick-slip movement. The base can tip on uneven benches or when a heavy component is clamped far from the center of gravity. Crocodile clips can crush or puncture thin insulation if pressure is not carefully applied, shorting adjacent pins or damaging fragile wires.

The helping hand belongs in every soldering station alongside a damp sponge, brass wire cleaner, and wet paper towel. It costs between 8 and 40 dollars depending on materials and features. Industrial manufacturers, hobbyists, repair technicians, and educational labs all rely on them; they are nearly universal in electronics work because they solve a problem that cannot be solved well any other way without doubling setup time or sacrificing safety.
