A homebuild is an aircraft assembled by non-professionals, either from a complete kit supplied by a manufacturer or from raw plans and materials sourced separately. The builder does all major fabrication and assembly work themselves, often over months or years in a garage or workshop. These range from simple single-seat ultralights to complex retractable-gear aircraft with engines producing 200+ horsepower. The FAA issues Experimental certificates for homebuilts, marking them fundamentally different from certified production aircraft.

Kit aircraft dominate the homebuild market because they reduce risk and engineering work. Suppliers like Van's Aircraft, Vans RV series, or Lancair provide pre-cut fuselage components, pre-formed wing skins, engines, avionics packages, and detailed assembly manuals. Builders still fabricate and rivet major sections, install engines, and wire electrical systems. Plans-built aircraft require the builder to acquire materials separately and interpret two-dimensional drawings; this demands stronger skills but offers flexibility in design modification and potentially lower total cost.

Building time and inspection burden

Homebuild projects consume 1,000 to 3,000 hours minimum, with complex pressurized designs reaching 5,000 hours or more. The builder must document all work and submit to FAA inspection at critical milestones: 25 percent completion, 51 percent completion, and final airworthiness inspection before the aircraft receives its Experimental certificate. This inspection process exists because homebuilts cannot rely on type-certified design data or production quality control.

Common failure points in homebuilts reflect amateur error: rivet spacing that is inconsistent, leading to skin buckling; improperly torqued engine mounts causing vibration and loose fasteners; fuel system leaks from solder joints that were not properly fluxed or cooled; and control surface rigging that is out of tolerance. Many homebuilders lack formal training in aircraft structure and mechanics, so designs that work on paper fail in flight. Poor documentation also complicates later maintenance and transfer of the aircraft to new owners.

The term emerged in the 1950s when amateur designers and builders began scaling down and simplifying certified aircraft designs to create affordable flying machines. Organizations like the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) formalized this practice, developed standards, and lobbied the FAA for a regulatory framework. Homebuilts now represent roughly one-third of the general aviation fleet in the United States, concentrated in kit aircraft that share proven designs and components across hundreds of individual builds.

Maintenance of homebuilts requires specialized knowledge because documentation is often sparse, design details vary between individual examples, and parts sourcing can be difficult. Professional mechanics may refuse to work on homebuilts or charge premium labor rates due to liability and unfamiliarity with non-standard construction. A homebuilder who stops flying often finds that resale value erodes sharply if the aircraft has incomplete records or if the building trend has shifted away from that particular model.
