HRT: a right triangle cut diagonally from a square

A half-rectangle triangle (HRT) is a right-angled triangle produced by cutting a rectangle diagonally from corner to corner. In quilting and patchwork, this is the standard unit created when you need two identical right triangles from a single rectangular piece of fabric. Unlike a half-square triangle (HST), which comes from cutting a square diagonally, an HRT retains two sides of unequal length and can be oriented in four different ways within a pieced pattern.

The practical advantage of an HRT lies in its dimensions. A 2-inch by 4-inch rectangle, cut diagonally, yields two triangles with a 2-inch short leg and a 4-inch long leg. This allows quilters to build rectangular blocks and elongated patterns without the waste or complexity of cutting and combining multiple small squares. HRTs are essential for directional designs, flying geese units, and borders that need to extend in one direction more than another.

Cutting and grain alignment

Grain line matters critically with HRTs. If the long edge runs parallel to the fabric's warp or weft, the triangle has more stability. If it runs diagonally across the grain, the bias edge is vulnerable to stretching during sewing and pressing. Professional quilters typically cut HRTs so the short leg sits on the straight grain, keeping the long leg and the bias edge in positions where they can be handled more carefully or stabilized with a seam.

Naming convention distinguishes HRTs from the more common HST in digital patterns and rotary-cutting guides. Because rectangles come in many aspect ratios, an HRT specification must state both dimensions. A 2x4 HRT is not interchangeable with a 3x6 HRT, even though both are technically half-rectangle triangles. Software and printed templates often label these explicitly to prevent cutting errors.

HRTs appear most frequently in log cabin variations, border treatments, and tessellating designs where the asymmetry is intentional. They are less common than HSTs in modern quilt design but remain a foundational technique in traditional and foundation-pieced patterns where precise angles and economical cutting were always primary concerns.
