HST: the quick way to cut and sew triangle pairs
A half-square triangle (HST) is a square of fabric cut diagonally once to produce two right-angled triangles, each with the right angle at one corner and the hypotenuse as the long edge. In patchwork and quilting, two contrasting fabric squares are sewn together along the diagonal, then cut apart to yield two identical two-color triangle units. This method is faster and more accurate than cutting individual triangles and piecing them separately.
The standard HST workflow begins with two squares of equal size, typically between 1.5 and 6 inches depending on the finished block size needed. Sewers draw a diagonal line from corner to corner, stitch along that line, then cut on the line to separate the two resulting HST units. Each unit consists of one triangle from each fabric color, with the seam running along the bias. The bias edge requires careful handling during pressing and subsequent sewing to avoid stretching.
Variants and efficiency considerations
Factory and production quilters often use HST strip piecing or grid methods to generate multiple units from a single piece of yardage. A grid of squares is drawn or printed on interfacing, sewn in a continuous pattern, then cut apart to yield dozens of HSTs at once. This approach significantly reduces waste compared to individual square pairs and speeds production. Chain piecing, where multiple units are sewn without cutting threads between them, further improves throughput.
The main technical challenge is managing the bias edges created by the diagonal cut. Pressing direction matters: pressing the seam to one color or open affects how subsequent seams will nest and intersect. In blocks where multiple HSTs meet at a central point, controlling bias stretch is critical to achieve sharp, flat intersections. Quilters often square up finished HSTs with a ruler after pressing, trimming away frayed bias edges and ensuring precise dimensions.
HSTs are foundational to thousands of quilt block designs, from simple pinwheel blocks to complex medallion patterns. The term has become standard vocabulary in quilting communities, appearing in pattern instructions, fabric cutting charts, and tutorial descriptions.
