joisting: the skeletal framework holding up a floor or ceiling

Joisting is the structural assembly of joists, the parallel beams that span between support walls or beams to carry the weight of a floor, ceiling, or roof. In building construction, joists are typically spaced 16 inches or 24 inches on center, running perpendicular to the main supporting members. The joisting system distributes loads downward and prevents deflection across the span, making it the primary horizontal load-bearing element in light-frame construction.

The material and sizing of joists depend on span, load class, and local building code. Solid sawn lumber, engineered lumber (LVL or I-joists), and steel angles or channels all appear in joisting arrangements. Wood joists in residential work typically run 2 by 8, 2 by 10, or 2 by 12 nominal dimensions; longer spans or heavier loads require deeper sections or closer spacing. Steel joists allow longer spans with less depth and are common in commercial and industrial buildings where unobstructed ceiling height is critical.

Lateral bracing and failure modes

Joisting must resist not only vertical bending but also lateral movement. Blocking, bridging, rim board attachment, and subfloor or sheathing all function to restrain joists sideways and prevent twisting. Undersized joisting, inadequate bearing support, water damage (in wood), or corrosion (in steel) are common failure modes. Concentrated loads, such as from a bearing wall above, must land directly on joists or be distributed across multiple members.

The term joisting encompasses both the individual pieces and their assembled arrangement, so one might refer to the joisting of the second floor or inspect the joisting for rot. Joistwork is an older synonym. In structural drawings, joisting layouts are shown in floor framing plans, with joist size, spacing, and direction clearly marked. The difference between proper joisting and cut-rate installation directly affects floor stiffness, squeaking, and long-term settlement.
