A kilogram of hydrogen combines with roughly eight kilograms of oxygen to release approximately 13.6 megajoules of energy, delivering specific impulse around 450 seconds in a well-designed engine.
Handling hydrolox demands extreme discipline in ground operations. Liquid hydrogen boils at 20 kelvin and requires heavily insulated storage vessels, typically aluminum or stainless steel tanks that cool rapidly and operate at near-vacuum pressure. Liquid oxygen, at 90 kelvin, presents its own hazards: it accelerates combustion and reacts violently with organic materials. Both propellants must be loaded minutes before engine ignition because boil-off losses mount quickly. Technicians working these systems follow strict no-smoking, no-organic-material protocols; even grease on equipment becomes a hazard around LOX.
Why hydrolox dominates upper stages
Hydrolox engines like the RL10 and RS-25 power upper stages and main engines because of their high exhaust velocity and excellent performance in vacuum. The low molecular weight of water exhaust means expelled gas exits faster than heavier combustion products from kerosene or methane systems. However, the low density of hydrogen creates a drawback: tanks for the same energy content must be much larger and heavier than those for denser fuels, making hydrolox less practical for first stages where mass efficiency matters most.
Launch operations center on precise tanking sequences. LOX loads first into the main tank, followed by the helium pressurization system, then liquid hydrogen last (since it boils off most rapidly). Technicians monitor tank pressures, temperature sensors, and vent rates continuously. If conditions drift outside narrow windows, the countdown holds while ground crews recool systems or reduce propellant quantities. Residual moisture in lines will freeze solid in liquid hydrogen, requiring purges with gaseous nitrogen before each fill cycle.
The term combines the chemical symbols and colloquial names: hydro for hydrogen, lox from the standard aerospace abbreviation for liquid oxygen.
