To detect (something) with radar.

paint: light up on the radar scope

In aviation maintenance and air traffic control, to paint means to display a target on a radar scope. When an aircraft's radar reflective surfaces catch radio waves transmitted by ground or airborne radar, those waves bounce back to the receiver and generate a visible blip or trace on the display. That blip is the paint. A strong paint means the target is well-defined and easy to track; a weak paint suggests degraded reflectivity or signal loss.

The term originated in the early days of radar when cathode-ray tube displays showed phosphor that glowed where the returning signal arrived. Literally, the electron beam was painting the tube face with light. The language stuck even though modern displays use digital pixels instead of glowing phosphor. Maintenance crews still say an antenna is painting when it is returning a clean signal, or that a reflection paint is degrading when ice accumulation or corrosion begins to reduce radar cross-section.

Radar paint matters because detection depends on it. An aircraft with poor paint characteristics, due to damage to skin panels, cracked radomes, or misaligned transponder antennas, becomes harder to see. In high-altitude operations where terrain and weather clutter fill the display, a strong paint stands out and allows controllers to maintain separation. Military radar-absorbent coatings, by contrast, are designed to prevent painting, which is precisely why they reduce radar observability.

Maintenance technicians check paint quality as part of antenna system tests. They verify that radar returns meet signal strength specifications and that the antenna's radiation pattern has not degraded. Corrosion under skin panels, salt-spray damage on the fuselage, and delamination of composite materials all degrade paint. Poor paint can trigger false warnings in collision avoidance systems if the return is intermittent or noisy.
