An intertie is a horizontal structural member that connects two or more vertical posts, studs, or columns within a framed assembly, positioned between the primary ties such as sills and plates. It works by restraining lateral movement and distributing loads across multiple uprights, preventing them from acting as independent elements and instead tying them into a unified frame.
Interties are most common in timber frame construction and steel frame work. In wood framing, they are typically 2x4 or 2x6 members bolted or mortised between posts spaced 8 to 16 feet apart; in masonry and heavy timber structures, they may be doubled members or steel angles and channels. Their placement varies by design: interior interties might sit 4 or 6 feet above the sill, while girts or collar ties in roof trusses serve as upper interties.
Interties are vulnerable to moisture damage in timber construction, especially when inadequately sealed or ventilated. Lateral thrust from wind loads or eccentric loading can cause splitting along grain at connection points if bolts are over-tightened or holes are poorly drilled. Corrosion of steel interties and fasteners occurs in coastal or humid environments, requiring hot-dip galvanizing or equivalent protection.
The term 'intertie' reflects its position: literally between primary ties. Unlike sills, which sit at the foundation, and plates, which carry roof or floor joists, interties are secondary lateral members. In modern engineering, they are distinguished from bracing systems (diagonal members) and shear walls, which perform related but different functions. A well-designed intertie system reduces deflection, improves racking resistance, and simplifies load paths in both renovation and new construction.
