A roof-plate is a horizontal structural member, usually a timber beam or doubled-up board, that sits atop the exterior walls of a building and receives the lower (heel) ends of the roof rafters. It distributes the weight and thrust of the roof across the masonry or timber wall beneath it, and it provides a continuous bearing surface to which the rafters are nailed or bolted. In modern construction, it is often called a top plate when it crowns a stud wall, but the term roof-plate persists in traditional and formal building documentation.
The roof-plate must be substantial enough to resist the crushing load of the rafters and the outward thrust they exert as they carry the roof load and any snow or wind forces. In timber-frame buildings, it is commonly a 4 by 6 or 4 by 8 inch (nominal) beam, sometimes doubled for extra strength. In masonry construction, it sits in mortar bedded to the top of the stone or brick, often pinned by iron straps or bolts anchored into the wall. The plate also serves as a datum line for setting rafter angles and heights during assembly.
Failure of a roof-plate most often occurs through decay of the timber where it meets damp masonry, or through insufficient nailing where rafters have pulled away from the plate under wind load or rafter thrust. In unreinforced masonry buildings, the roof-plate can also split the wall outward if the rafter feet are cut with too steep an angle or if the thrust is not properly resisted by interior bracing or ceiling ties. For this reason, building codes require that roof-plates in stone or brick structures be tied down with bolts or straps, typically spaced at 4 to 6 feet, running into the wall body at least 12 inches.
Historical and Regional Variation
In Victorian and Edwardian building practice, especially in Britain and North America, a heavy roof-plate was a mark of substantial construction. In some regions, particularly where timber was scarce or where fire risk was high, iron plates were used instead of wood, or timber was protected with lime mortar or clay packing. Modern builders often omit the formal roof-plate and instead rest rafters directly on doubled-up wall top plates, but the distinction remains useful in heritage surveys and when studying load paths in older structures.
The term sits at the intersection of carpentry and masonry vocabulary. A roof-plate is what the rafter carpenter works with when cutting bird's-mouths and marking rise-and-run, but it is also the interface that the mason must set truly level and in correct alignment. Confusion sometimes arises because a roof-plate and a top plate serve similar functions but are named differently depending on context; in platform framing, the term top plate is standard, while roof-plate appears more often in descriptions of rafter connections in masonry or post-and-beam structures.
