Jacob's staff
A single straight rod or staff, pointed and iron-shod at the bottom, for penetrating the ground, and having a socket joint at the top, used, instead of a tripod, for supporting a compass.

A Jacob's staff is a single wooden rod, typically 4 to 6 feet long, with an iron ferrule and point at the base, that serves as a portable support for a compass or other surveying instrument in the field. Instead of the three-legged stability of a tripod, it relies on being pushed firmly into the ground, making it faster to deploy when you need a quick bearing or sight line without carrying additional equipment.
The rod itself is usually ash, beech, or similar straight-grained hardwood, squared or rounded, approximately 1 to 1.5 inches in section. At the upper end sits a socket joint, typically brass or iron, that holds the compass or alidade at a fixed angle. The iron shoe at the bottom is sharp enough to penetrate turf and loose soil without excessive force, though on hard ground or rock it becomes nearly useless.
The chief advantage is portability and speed. A surveyor can carry a Jacob's staff in one hand while holding field notes in the other, and plant it in seconds without assembly. It is commonly used for reconnaissance surveys, boundary checking, and taking spot bearings across short distances. It works well on soft ground, meadows, and cultivated land where a firm stance is easy to achieve.
Limitations and context
The single support point makes it unstable on slopes, soft mud, or uneven terrain where a tripod's three feet would remain level. Wind deflection is also greater than with a tripod, and the operator's arm is partly responsible for keeping the staff vertical. For this reason, Jacob's staff surveys are typically used for sketch maps, quick checks, and preliminary work rather than precise, permanent boundaries.
The name originates from Jacob's staff or cross-staff, a medieval astronomical and navigational instrument, though the surveying version bears little resemblance beyond the general concept of a hand-held staff. It appears in surveyors' literature from the 17th century onward and remains in use in forestry and land surveying where its lightness and speed outweigh the loss of precision compared to a properly set tripod.
