jinny road: gravity-powered haulage on a slope

A jinny road is an inclined tramway in a coal mine where the weight of loaded coal cars descending under gravity pulls empty cars back up the slope. The laden cars are connected to empty ones by a rope or cable running over pulleys, creating a balanced system that needs minimal horse or steam power to operate. This setup was especially common in British collieries where seams lay on sloping ground, making gravity the cheapest form of mechanical advantage available.

The term comes from gin, meaning an engine or mechanical device, combined with road for the track itself. Earlier variants used simple rope systems with human operators; later versions incorporated cast-iron pulleys and proper inclined rails. The angle of the slope determined efficiency: too shallow and friction wasted energy; too steep and brakes became critical safety equipment.

A working jinny road required careful maintenance. Ropes stretched and frayed, especially when loaded cars weighed 2 to 4 tons. The rail track itself wore unevenly because ascending empty cars rode on one rail while descending loaded cars favored the other. Brake operators sat on the loaded car or worked levers at fixed points, since a rope-and-pulley system could not be stopped instantly.

Variants and decline

A self-acting incline worked the same principle but with no attendant, relying on locked brakes and mechanical governors to control descent speed. Where slopes were gentler, pit managers sometimes used horses instead of gravity, reversing the logic entirely. By the 1920s, electric winding engines and underground locomotives replaced jinny roads in most deep mines, though shallow, steeply-sloped seams in South Wales and northern England continued using them well into the mid-20th century.

The jinny road belonged to a specific era of coal extraction: profitable enough to warrant track and rope, but not wealthy enough to afford purpose-built engines at every access point. It represents an ingenious use of physics where capital was scarce and gravity was free.
