mazut

A grade of heavy fuel oil used in industry and also sometimes used in lieu of home heating oil.

Mazut is a residual fuel oil produced by atmospheric distillation of crude petroleum. It is a dark, viscous liquid that sits between gas oil and bitumen in the refining hierarchy. Mazut contains the heavier hydrocarbons left over after lighter fractions like gasoline and diesel have been drawn off. Industrial boilers, power plants, and furnaces in Russia, Eastern Europe, and parts of Central Asia rely on mazut as their primary fuel stock.

The term "mazut" comes from Russian and refers specifically to fuels graded to GOST standards rather than the arbitrary Western classification system. Russian mazut grades like M100 (100 centistoke kinematic viscosity at 50 degrees Celsius) and M40 define the product more precisely than Western descriptors. M100 is the most common industrial grade. The fuel arrives at the user site as a liquid that must be heated before injection into burners, since its pour point typically ranges from minus 5 to plus 5 degrees Celsius depending on crude source and refinery practice.

Mazut's composition varies considerably with crude origin and processing conditions. Sulfur content ranges from 0.5 to 3.5 percent by weight, depending on whether the crude was sour or sweet and whether desulfurization was applied. Ash content sits around 0.1 to 0.15 percent. These components create two persistent operational headaches: corrosion in boiler tubes and stack emissions that require scrubbing or blending with lower sulfur fractions to meet environmental regulations.

Heating and handling systems

Industrial plants burning mazut require heated fuel tanks (typically 60 to 80 degrees Celsius) and fuel supply lines traced with steam or electric heat. Without preheating, the oil will not atomize in the burner and combustion becomes incomplete, producing heavy smoke and poor heat release. Fuel filtration to 100 microns or finer is mandatory to prevent injector clogging. Storage tanks must be inspected regularly for sludge and water accumulation, as mazut readily absorbs moisture and oxidizes if left exposed to air for extended periods.

Mazut remains dominant in Russian district heating systems and industrial applications partly for economic reasons and partly because infrastructure was built around it decades ago. Newer installations in Western Europe and North America favor lighter distillate fuels (gas oil, kerosene) or have switched to natural gas. However, in regions where crude is processed locally and pipeline gas is limited or expensive, mazut continues to be the economical choice for large-scale heat generation despite its handling demands and emissions profile.
