LATCH is a vehicle anchorage system designed to secure child safety seats without threading the vehicle's seat belt through the seat. The acronym stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children. It consists of two lower anchor points (rigid or loop connectors) built into the vehicle seat structure, typically positioned where the seat back meets the cushion, plus an upper tether anchor point on the vehicle body or seat back. Child seats equipped with LATCH connectors clip directly to these anchor points instead of relying on the seat belt for primary restraint.
The system became mandatory on all new passenger vehicles in the United States starting in 2002, and has since been adopted in many other markets including Canada, Australia, and parts of Europe. Lower anchors are rated to hold approximately 3,000 pounds of force in a crash; tether anchors provide additional stability by preventing forward rotation of the seat during frontal impact. A single vehicle seat may have one or two lower anchor points, depending on width and design, and manufacturers mark these locations clearly to prevent confusion during installation.
Design and installation variants
LATCH connectors come in two primary forms: rigid metal connectors that clip onto anchor bars, and webbing-style connectors that loop around the same anchor points. Both types must be positioned and tightened to eliminate seat movement in any direction. The upper tether strap, always webbing-based, hooks over a single anchor point mounted high in the vehicle, typically on the rear shelf, headliner, or vehicle frame near the seat. Proper installation requires the vehicle manual for anchor locations, as these vary widely by manufacturer and model year.
The main failure modes relate to incorrect installation and anchor point degradation. Users frequently fail to thread the tether correctly, apply insufficient tension, or attempt to use LATCH on seats wider than the anchor spacing allows. Some vehicle designs place anchor points awkwardly, making full tightening difficult without tools. Plastic anchor covers can crack if forced, and repeated use of low-quality or kinked connectors can stress the vehicle's anchor bar, which is typically welded steel tubing integral to the seat frame.
LATCH does not replace the vehicle seat belt; it supplements the restraint system for light-duty child seats. Full-size booster seats and high-back models often exceed LATCH weight ratings and must use the seat belt instead. Vehicles with bucket seats, bench seating, and rear-facing configurations present different challenges, and some seating positions lack LATCH anchors altogether. Understanding the vehicle's specific anchor layout and the child seat's weight rating is essential for safe use.
