A lavatory in manufacturing is a fixed washing station, typically mounted on a wall or pedestal, supplied with running water and soap. It exists to remove oil, metal shavings, chemical residue, and other contaminants from workers' hands, forearms, and small tools before they leave the production floor or enter break areas. The fixture is a regulatory requirement in most jurisdictions; facilities must provide one within reasonable walking distance of any workstation where workers handle materials that soil skin.

Industrial lavatories come in several forms. Wall-mounted models save floor space and drain into floor-mounted waste lines. Pedestal units offer independence from wall infrastructure but occupy more footprint. Many feature foot-operated or motion-sensor faucets to minimize cross-contamination, since pressing a handle after washing defeats the purpose. Some include integrated soap dispensers and paper towel holders. In heavy manufacturing environments, deep basins and high-volume drains prevent overflow when workers rinse off bulky debris or dried material.

Materials and performance

Industrial lavatories are typically fabricated from stainless steel or heavily enameled cast iron to resist corrosion from acidic coolants, alkaline cleaners, and salt spray in coastal facilities. The basin is often sloped toward a central drain with a 1 to 1.5 inch diameter outlet to handle grit and filings. Water temperature is a practical concern: cold water tightens pores and leaves oils on skin, while warm water (around 110 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit) is more effective for removing grease, though supply systems must include scalding protection to prevent injury.

Maintenance issues arise when drain screens trap metal chips or dried adhesive, creating stagnant water and odor. The overflow inlet, if present, can become blocked with soap scum. In facilities where workers handle reactive materials like lime dust or certain epoxies, the lavatory must be sized and positioned so the worker can reach it quickly in case of skin contact; this is a safety and liability concern, not merely a convenience.

The term "lavatory" entered English from Latin lavatorium (a place for washing). In manufacturing, it is distinct from a safety shower or eyewash station, which are designed for emergency rinsing of the whole body or face after contact with hazardous substances. A lavatory is routine hygiene infrastructure; a shower or eyewash is emergency equipment.
