Loppers are hand-operated cutting tools with handles typically 16 to 32 inches long, used to prune branches 0.5 to 2 inches in diameter. The long leverage allows a single operator to cut wood that would be impossible to sever with one-handed pruning shears or secateurs. Two cutting blades work on a scissor or anvil principle, with the handles providing mechanical advantage to concentrate force at the cutting point.
The main design variant is the choice between bypass and anvil cutters. Bypass loppers have two curved blades that pass each other like scissors, making a clean cut but requiring alignment with the branch. Anvil loppers feature one sharp blade that closes against a flat metal or wooden base, crushing the branch as much as cutting it; they work when branches are slightly misaligned but leave more damage to the remaining plant tissue. Ratchet and gear-assisted models reduce the hand strength required, trading speed for mechanical help.
Quality loppers use drop-forged steel blades that hold an edge better than stamped blades; the fulcrum or pivot point must be rigid to avoid flexing under load. Handle material ranges from wood or fiberglass (cheaper, heavier) to aluminum alloy (lighter, more expensive). Blade coatings that prevent sap buildup extend tool life and reduce slipping, especially important in fruit orchards or when pruning conifers.
Loppers sit between hand shears and power saws in the cutting hierarchy. Where shears become tiring for repeated cuts or insufficient in cutting power, and where a chainsaw is too loud or dangerous in tight spaces, loppers are the standard choice for orchard work, vineyard training, and general woody shrub management. The term "lopping" itself describes the action of cutting off tops or branches, making the tool name transparently functional.
Common problems arise from dull blades (requiring regular sharpening or replacement), loose pivot bolts (causing lateral play), and sap accumulation that hardens and wedges the blades. Operating with wet or frozen branches strains the mechanism. Proper maintenance, including cleaning and light oiling after use, extends tool life significantly.
