To cure (undergo a chemical or physical process for preservation or use) in a particular color or area.

cure up: finish hay or crop to target moisture and color

To cure up is to bring a cut crop, most commonly hay, through the final stages of drying to reach the target moisture content and desired color. The process begins when forage is cut and left in the field to shed water through evaporation and air circulation. Cure up describes the critical window when the material transitions from fresh-cut condition to stable storage moisture, typically dropping from 80 percent water content down to 15-20 percent for hay baled and stored indoors.

Weather controls cure up almost entirely. Sunny days with moderate wind speed the process; rain interrupts it and can trigger spoilage or bleaching. A crop left to cure up over three to five days in good conditions will retain more leaf material and protein than one spread thin for slower curing. Alfalfa cures up slower than grass hay because of its thicker stems and denser plant structure. Operators making baleage or silage work with partially cured material, sometimes at 40-50 percent moisture, rather than waiting for full cure up.

The term cure up also refers to the visible result: a properly cured crop will shift from bright green to golden tan or honey color, depending on species and weather. Color is both practical and commercial. Discolored or bleached hay signals that valuable leaf material has been lost to sun exposure or rain. Buyers and end users of hay assess cure up quality by eye, feeling for brittleness and checking for musty or moldy odors that indicate incomplete cure.

Tedding and windrowing equipment are deployed during cure up to expose drying material to air and sun. A tedder throws cut hay into the air to break up damp clumps; a windrower gathers partially dried material into lines for easier raking and baling. Farmers monitor weather forecasts closely during cure up and may cut when rain threatens to arrive, forcing them to interrupt the drying cycle and restart.

Cure up differs from the broader term curing because it emphasizes the completion phase and the field timeline rather than the entire preservation method. It is also distinct from natural fermentation curing used in silage or haylage, where moisture retention and anaerobic chemistry do the preservation work. For dry hay, a successful cure up is the foundation of storage stability and nutritional value.
