Marble is a non-foliated metamorphic rock formed when limestone or dolostone is subjected to heat and pressure deep within the Earth's crust. The original calcium carbonate recrystallizes into interlocking calcite or dolomite crystals, typically 0.1 to 10 millimeters across, creating a dense, hard stone suitable for quarrying and finishing. The transformation destroys the fossil record and sedimentary textures of the parent limestone, replacing them with a crystalline mass that takes a polish and resists moderate weathering.

Marble occurs in various colors depending on trace minerals and impurities present during metamorphism. Pure white marble contains few foreign elements and commands premium prices in sculpture work; gray, pink, and black varieties result from graphite, iron oxides, or other mineral inclusions. Veining patterns form where mineral-rich fluids moved through the rock during metamorphism, creating the distinctive striations valued in architectural cladding and decorative applications.

Quarrying and Economics

Marble is extracted by saw-cutting and wedging blocks from the bedrock, a labor-intensive process that yields substantial waste. Quarries operate where marble beds are thick enough to justify the infrastructure cost, typically in regional clusters: Italy (Carrara), Turkey, Spain, and China account for the majority of global production. A single large block can weigh 20 to 40 tons and command prices of several hundred to several thousand dollars per ton depending on color, grain structure, and origin.

The stone is finished by splitting, sawing, planing, and polishing to specified dimensions and surface textures. Honing produces a satin finish; polishing creates a glossy, reflective surface. Marble is workable with hand tools and modern pneumatic equipment, but its brittleness requires careful technique to avoid breakage along the grain. The material's relatively low compressive strength (around 60 to 170 megapascals) and susceptibility to acid rain and acidic cleaners limit its use in exposed exterior applications in industrial regions.

In contemporary building trade, marble faces competition from engineered stone and ceramic tiles, yet remains the benchmark for luxury interiors, sculpture, and heritage conservation. Its thermal mass and acoustic properties make it useful in certain institutional settings. Recycled marble offcuts are crushed for aggregates, filler, and calcium carbonate powder, minimizing waste from extraction operations.
