A crosscut saw is a hand saw or powered saw designed to sever wood fibers running along the length of a log or board by cutting perpendicular to the grain direction. Unlike a rip saw, which follows the grain to split wood lengthwise, a crosscut saw works against the grain, making it the primary tool for reducing logs to working lengths in the forest and in the mill.

Hand crosscut saws typically have teeth set at a shallower angle than rip saws, usually around 15 to 20 degrees, and are sharpened to a chisel point rather than a hook shape. This geometry allows the teeth to sever fibers cleanly rather than peel them away. A two-person crosscut saw, or misery whip, measures 5 to 8 feet long and was the standard for felling and bucking logs before mechanical power became dominant. These saws require regular tensioning of the blade and careful sharpening to maintain performance.

Powered alternatives and industrial use

Band saws and circular saws have largely replaced hand crosscut saws in commercial operations, but the principle remains identical: a blade moving at high speed severs the grain rather than splitting along it. A typical circular saw blade for crosscutting has 40 to 80 teeth, compared to 20 to 30 for ripping, to produce a finer cut with less tear-out. Industrial crosscut operations in mills run continuously, with logs fed mechanically through stationary blades.

Crosscutting is the first processing step in most softwood and hardwood mills. The term itself reflects the practical reality: you cut across the log's length, not with it. Efficiency in crosscutting affects yield directly, since each cut wastes kerf width (typically 3 to 6 mm for a saw blade) and determines the quality of the exposed end grain. Poor crosscutting introduces checks and surface damage that lower board value.

The distinction between crosscut and rip work remains embedded in tool design and worker vocabulary even as electricity and automation have transformed the trade. A worker still understands that crosscutting opposes the grain's natural splitting tendency and demands different tooth geometry, sharpening angles, and feed pressure than ripping.
