Milpa is a polyculture farming method that grows maize, beans, and squash as a single integrated system on the same plot. The three plants are sown together and harvested together, their growth cycles overlapping across a single season. The practice spans Central America and southern Mexico, with evidence of continuous use stretching back at least 3,500 years. It remains the dominant small-scale crop system across rural Mesoamerica today.

The agronomic logic of milpa rests on complementary plant functions. Maize grows tall and provides a natural trellis for pole beans, which fix atmospheric nitrogen into the soil through nodules on their root systems. Squash, planted at ground level, spreads its large leaves to shade the soil, reducing water loss and suppressing weeds. Each plant occupies a different vertical layer and draws nutrients at different depths and rates. The beans replace nitrogen that the maize depletes, creating a closed nutrient loop that sustains productivity across repeated plantings on the same land.

Planting density and species choice vary by region and soil condition. In wetter lowland zones, farmers may plant four or five maize stalks per mound before adding beans once the maize reaches knee height. In drier highland areas, planting is sparser and timing is adjusted to match rainfall patterns. Some milpa systems incorporate amaranth, chile peppers, or other crops alongside the traditional trio. Spacing typically ranges from 60 to 90 centimeters between maize hills, with beans and squash seeds dropped into the same mound or nearby rows.

Milpa management demands consistent labor throughout the growing season. Weeding by hand remains the norm, as herbicides damage the intercropped plants selectively. Pest pressure is generally lower than in monoculture maize, partly because the squash and bean plants disrupt pest habitat and partly because natural enemies find diverse refuges in the canopy. Yields per hectare of each individual crop are lower than single-crop cultivation, but total caloric and protein output per unit area often exceeds monoculture systems, especially when accounting for nitrogen savings and reduced fertilizer costs.

The term itself comes from Nahuatl milpan, meaning "in the field." Milpa remains central to food security and land management across indigenous and rural farming communities, though pressure from mechanized grain export systems and chemical agriculture has reduced its adoption in some areas. Understanding milpa is essential for anyone working on sustainable agriculture, seed preservation, or smallholder farm productivity in the region.
